My family welcomed our third baby girl into the world on August 4th, 2024. My third daughter’s birth story was nothing short of exciting, as many births are. On the night of Saturday August 3, I was having semi-regular contractions, though they were about 7-10 minutes apart (I wrote the times of them down and still have the note on my computer!), and were not really that intense at all. It seemed I was in prodromal labor. The contractions continued all night so I didn’t get much sleep.
To my disappointment, around 9:30 the next morning (August 4th), the contractions really just took a break. For about an hour. So, I figured I’d head to church with my family, since it didn’t seem like things were actually going anywhere! Probably about 11:00 or so, contractions started to pick up again, and this time they were so intense. I began having to use boxed breathing (breathe 4 seconds in, pause 4 seconds, 4 seconds out, pause 4 seconds) and use other relaxation techniques to get through contractions. After about an hour of this, we headed to the hospital. I literally began to fear that I was going to have this girl in the car on the way there!
Finally, we arrived. Contractions were still so intense and about 5 minutes apart. When the nurse checked to see how far along I was, I was almost at the point of pushing. I was SO surprised. So obviously, I was admitted, with nurses saying things like, we have called your doctor but if she does not arrive on time for you to push, we have other staff here to deliver your baby (because things were progressing so quickly)! Thankfully, my amazing provider arrived very quickly. I was still breathing through contractions, my husband providing counter pressure, when my water broke. It was the dramatic scene of a huge gush. This is when contractions really, really picked up in intensity. I was about 10 minutes away from pushing when I asked for an epidural, which amazingly, was able to get, literally right before I started pushing. Apparently that does not happen very often! I think it was about 45 minutes of pushing, when Marie Elise Pohly finally arrived, not 2 hours after we arrived at the hospital. I felt immediate joy and relief when I held her in my arms for the first time.
As a Huntsville Photographer, I knew baby girl would be in front of my camera a good deal. Her first photography session is below with her big sisters who just absolutely adore her! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my third daughter’s birth story! She is truly a gift!
