Is my home a good option for an in home session? A common question.

Let’s talk about a few things to consider before answering the question- is my home a good option for an in home session? First- what type of photography style are you looking for? If your home lacks decent natural light and has darker textures and colors throughout, then your images are going to give off more of a dark and moodier vibe. If your home has lighter colors, a more neutral palette, a decent (not necessarily abundant) amount of natural light, then your images may present with more of a light and airy style.

Lighting

If you’re going for a more lighter toned image (as opposed to dark and moody), I would add that there is just nothing like the quality of image that natural light provides. A decent amount of natural light not only provides a good base for a photo (even if some flash or supplemental lighting has to be added). It also gives a chance to add in artistic elements that can complete a photo. I tell my clients that good, clean light is key. If you have one room with a window that gets a decent amount of light, your home may be an option for an in home session. A skilled photographer can get variety in one spot in your home. So, don’t feel like you need to have 3+ spots that fit that criteria. You don’t need the fancy living room or bedroom we all see on pinterest, either.
